Meet 2007 Sasha Cohen Award Winner, Sara Sanborn

On a recent Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of meeting Sara Sanborn. Sara is this year’s Sasha Cohen Award winner. She is 15 years old and a high school freshman. Sara is skating at the Junior level now and has been skating since she was 3 years old.

Her favorite spin in the flying camel spin. Her favorite jump is the double flip. Her biggest challenge is her double Alex which she has been working on for a few years.

Sara is also on the swim team and plays water polo. She wants other skaters to know that they can be involved in other activities and sports, as well as skating. Sara believes that skating is as much a mental as a physical sport. Her advise to younger skaters is not to get down on yourself if you have a bad jump or a bad competition, you have to keep a positive mental attitude.

Sara skates in the morning and swims in the afternoon. She says the worst part about skating is getting up at four o’clock in the morning and having to sacrifice going out with her friends, especially on Friday nights. But she says it’s worth it to be able to skate! Sara likes skating because itis fun and relaxing.

She likes to perform and compete. Skating makes her feel graceful. She competes in about five competitions a year. Sara says it’s “pretty cool to win the Sasha Cohen award because it means people have noticed me.” Her favorite skater, why of course, it’s Sasha Cohen!

Congratulations to Sara and good luck with your skating this year!
